New! In Person: 2 Week Co-Star On-Camera Audition Basics with Andrew Fem, Casting Director, Casting By Them

Tuesday, July 18, 2023, 6:30pm ET / 3:30pm PT

This event is in the past.

Don't miss our new in person class with casting director Andrew Fem whose credits include Stranger Things season 2 (Netflix), the movie FIRE ISLAND (Hulu), RUSSIAN DOLL (Netflix), SEX EDUCATION (Netflix), POWER (Starz) and HIGH MAINTENANCE (HBO).

Andrew's class is about the basics of on-camera auditions - because auditioning and acting are very different things. This class is not the typical format where you read a long scene, Andrew gives you acting notes about the character, you do the scene again, and then review how well you took on the adjustments. This class is not for advanced scene study in the way you’d typically think of it - where we really dig into the emotion of what’s playing out in a scene, and motivation/objective/obstacles, etc. This class isn’t really about your acting skills at all - it’s about your auditioning skills.

Smaller co-star auditions/sides
(especially for comedy) are often not emotionally focused, meaning that they’re often not about the journey of what a character is going thru, etc, they’re typically more environmentally focused, requiring you to pay attention a little more to world-building than character arc. Because when your whole character is “Can I get you some more water?” there’s not really much need for an arc; BUT there is a lot of stuff happening around you that you need to pay attention to - and that’s what this class is about.

This class focuses on basics and logistics of auditioning for on-camera, so you can walk away feeling empowered and informed, so you can deliver competitive co-star auditions for any casting director, regardless of the particular spin you might put on it. Because in this class, we’re not really focusing on spin, we’re focusing on building you a solid foundation. And a solid foundation will take you far. So let’s goooo!

This class is limited to 8 students and is for adults (18+).

Andrew Fem

Andrew Fem (they/them) is a trans non-binary casting director, college showcase consultant, community care organizer, and artist based in NYC. Throughout the last 15 years in casting, they’ve worked primarily in television, theater, and film; but they’ve done at least a little of just about everything, so let’s talk about what you need.

They are interested in united liberation thru identity-conscious casting. Authentic representation is essential, but it’s also the bare minimum.

They’re currently working on establishing paid casting fellowships to get more global majority people into the casting workforce, with the aim of making the field a little more equitably accessible and a little less racist.

Their approach to most things is best summed up by Priya Parker quoting her mother’s approach to life - her mother would ask herself: What is it I know how to do? Where is the need? and How can I help?
